Girl Power
By Anita Hymel
Catholic Charities' St. Charles Regional Office in Luling recently hosted its annual Girl Power summer camp.
About 25 girls ages 8-13 attended the event, which focused health and fitness and building self esteem and communication skills in a fun, social and nonacademic setting.
Girl Power is a national public education campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help encourage and motivate 8- to 13-year-old girls to make the most of their lives, said camp organizer Marcy Bales, a social worker with Catholic Charities.
Among the activities were making a "personal needs" flower mural, creating a picture frame and designing a friendship card and bracelet.
The campers also participated in sessions on body image, self-esteem, hygiene, behavior management, healthy relationships, goal setting, nutrition, teamwork and drug prevention.
Counselors for the camp were Bales and other social workers with Catholic Charities Susan Fendlason, Jennifer Kondroik, Bernice Rodriguez, Sara Bush and Jennifer Mingue.
The camp was sponsored, in part, by a grant from the St. Charles Women's Club.
"One of the goals of this camp is to help the girls understand themselves as young adults," Boles said.
