Letter to the Editor: Summer, Brought to You By... June 29, 2009 - The Times-Picayune
Again this June and July, hundreds of low-income children in Southeast Louisiana will be receiving a safe, educational summer camp experience as a part of Catholic Charities' Summer Witness program.
Archbishop Philip Hannan started the program in the 1960s when he invited African-American children from the Desire Housing Project to swim at the Notre Dame Seminary pool because the city pools were still segregated. Thousands of children over the years have benefited from summer breaks spent with Summer Witness.
Nearly 50 years later, the Summer Witness program has suffered, as many non-profits have, due to the recession and subsequent budget cuts. Without the support of generous corporate groups like the Entergy Charitable Foundation, many children in our area would not have a camping opportunity. Many would find themselves without adult supervision -- a prime reason children can end up on the streets and in trouble.
Catholic Charities is fortunate to have partners like Entergy that understand the importance of programs that engage, educate and inspire children while school is not in session.
